During emergencies brought on by events like storms or earthquakes access to electricity, running water, food, transportation, and communication networks may be interrupted for days or even weeks. Putting together an emergency kit and keeping it accessible will help you be prepared should your community ever be affected by any type of emergency. Here are the basic contents of an emergency kit that could be packed into a secure, portable plastic box (or boxes):
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Three-day supply of nonperishable food, like canned or dried food. (Remember to refresh water and food items every six months)
- Three-day supply of water for you and your pets (it is recommended that you should have one gallon of water a day for each person)
- If you have an infant, a three-day supply of formula or prepared baby food, diapers, wipes, and other essential supplies that children might need
- Solar charger or power pack for phone and/or rechargeable batteries and charger
- Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries
- First aid kit and manual
- Essential medicines for family members
- Can opener
- Cash (small bills are best) and credit cards
- Sturdy shoes
- Copies of your important personal documents
- Whistle
- Pocket knife and reusable eating utensils
- Matches in a waterproof container
- Blankets
- Warm Clothes
- Plastic sheet or tarp for rain protection
